"Adapting to Change"Pulau Langkawi....

Many years ago,Pulau Langkawi was just a fishing island,it's occupants were mostly fishermen leading quiet but contented lives. When the government decided to develop the island as a tourist resort, many of the locals were opposed to the change. they felt that development would interrupt their lifestyless and they did not like the idea of 'Mat Salleh'invading the island. When the airport was built, hotels started mushrooming along the lovely beaches of the island. The influx of tourists turned the island into a hive of activity. The locals started to realize that there was mush to be gained from the foreigners. They began getting involved in the tourism trade. They took on jobs as taxi-drivers,boat aperators, tour guides and many abtained jobs in hotels. They adaped to change that was taking place on island and they reaped great benefits from it.Pulau Lngkawi is now a world-renowned tourits resort. This would not have been possible without the invaluable input of the locals..
